Learning & Accreditation

The young people will have an individualised learning programme that includes social and academic learning. Goals will be set by the young person and by St Patrick's, this collaboration and personalisation should lay the foundations for a positive engagement in the project tailored to the young person’s individual and changing needs.

Accredited learning will be sourced that best suits the current needs and future development needs for successful transition into post 16 study or employment. St Patrick's is passed by the JCQ and is now an official examination Centre. St Patrick's uses NOCN for its accredited qualifications.

Qualifications

NOCN: Functional Skills. Numeracy and Literacy Functional Skills can be studied and examined at entry 1, Entry 2 and Entry 3. Examined and studied for Levels 1 and 2.

At St Patrick's we specialise in Functional Skills and Benchmark Qualifications to ensure learners have a wide range of key skills which are essential to life as an adult and are also suitable to every workplace.

Qualitative Learning

The value of activities and study will be enhanced and promoted through the connection to real life and how the process and outcome relates to the world of work and post 16 learning.

Each young person will have their own working portfolio and achievement portfolio. These portfolios will contain the evidence for formal assessment and assessment for their learning journey detailing their achievements in social interaction, taking part in activities, personal goals and information and guidance they have gathered to assist them in making the right decision for them at post 16. For those young people not working on accredited courses and concentrating upon their social, personal and career development these successes and progress will be celebrated through a specialised social and personal development portfolio.A range of experts and partner organisations will be employed to deliver current and key issue topics such as drug and alcohol awareness and safety, relationships, bullying, mental health and employment. These sessions may lead to and towards further qualifications and awards.

A range of delivery methods will be used to suit the variety of different learning styles that young people have. Activities will include practical, visual, audio, demonstrations, industry link experts, discussion and traditional study in order to maximise engagement and enhancement of learning.

To ensure the best possible delivery and enhancement of learning is taking place staff will be monitored and observed by senior staff.

Weekly meetings will underpin any issues and provide a development session in order to improve learning provision. At these times the young people’s feedback from activities will be consulted and used where appropriate to enhance lesson and session delivery. Portfolios will be moderated internally each half term to ensure each young person is making progress and the portfolios meet the external exam criteria.
Staff will undertake training to boost their session delivery skills and improve the quality of sessions. Subject specific training will be given and sourced in order to extend the range of courses offered to the young people. Internal training to share good practice amongst staff will also take place every fortnight. Senior staff will lead these sessions.

Personal Development

St Patrick's recognises and appreciates that each Young Person that joins us has individual needs and a learning journey to embark upon. In order to support these needs each Young Person will have a support plan drawn up to enable them to establish themselves positively and prepare them for successful start to post 16 study or the world of work. Each Young Person’s social development will be supported through mentoring at St Patrick's and engaging those with specific needs with the appropriate agencies. The support plans will be updated on a regular basis (weekly if required) in order to meet the needs of the Young Person. St Patrick's is keen to work with schools to carry on the support work that is in place and develop this further to re –engage the Young Person academically and socially.

The Young People will have the opportunity to take part in enrichment activities on and off site. This will provide valuable social development opportunities help build their confidence, self esteem and boost enjoyment of taking part in new experiences.
